Laser Treatments for Age Spots & Skin Blemishes
By R Green

Lasers are becoming more common in the medical field, particularly in cosmetics. Today’s laser technology can treat everything from acne scars to spider veins. Lasers & light based technology is being used to remove unwanted hair, tattoos and now age spots.

Age spots, or liver spots as some call them, are flat spots found on sun-exposed skin particularly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead. The color of these spots range from light brown to black and can appear on nearly all skin types. Age spots increase with age and with increased UV exposure. From the age of 40 onwards, the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and liver spots become more prominent.

But new advances in lasers are making age spots a thing of the past. Lasers such as the Fraxel, Medlite C6, and Candela AlexLAZR are now being employed to treat these discolorations of the skin.

The Candela AlexLAZR Laser treats light to dark pigmented spots and hyper pigmentation by penetrating into the dermal layer, treating the pigment store inside the cell that makes skin pigment and destroys pigment in the dermal layer as well by causing the top layer of pigmented skin to peel.

The Medlite C6™ laser is is most commonly used for removing brown age spots, "liver spots", freckles and many brown birthmarks like café au lait patches.

Intense Pulsed Light or IPL systems act similarly to lasers and are equally effective in treating age spots. These systems include the Solar Genesis skin therapy system, The Palomar RejuveLux system, and the StarLux system.

Solar Genesis skin therapy is a pulsed light system that is exceptionally effective at treating sun spots, age spots and freckles. The most popular areas of treatment are the face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms and hands, which typically have the most sun exposure.

The Palomar RejuveLux Process is a pulsed light system that eliminates pigmented lesions (sunspots or age spots) by delivering a pulse of intense light which passes harmlessly through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the lesion.

StarLux system is the aesthetic industry's most advanced pulsed-light system & can be used to remove unwanted pigmentation of the skin: freckles, sun spots, liver spots of the face, shoulders, legs, arms, hands, and chest.

As you can see, these new technologies offer a great deal of hope for those suffering with age spots. It is advised that you consult your doctor for additional information on these procedures.
